Cypriot municipalities set goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2030

Cyprus is on a mission. Towns like Limassol, Strovolos, Paphos, and Aradippou have joined forces to fight climate change and make their communities eco-friendly by 2030.

A number of significant municipalities in Cyprus are getting ready to start a series of projects with the goal of becoming climate neutral by the year 2030 as part of a concerted effort to tackle climate change. The overall budget for these ground-breaking initiatives is a staggering €1 billion.

The municipalities of Limassol, Strovolos, Paphos, and Aradippou are the driving force behind these initiatives, and they are all active participants in the European program "100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030." The mayors of Limassol, Strovolos, and Aradippou met with Irene Piki, Deputy Minister to the President, on Tuesday to examine the program's development and upcoming steps.

The mayor of Limassol, Nicos Nicolaides, informed the European Commission of his city's preparedness to submit the "Climate City Contract" along with detailed recommendations for numerous planned activities and projects. The Mayor noted the initiative's astounding scope, which includes over 300 projects with a combined budget of more than €1 billion.

These initiatives cover a range of industries, including those in the energy, construction, transportation, circular economy, marine, and coastal activities. Furthermore, a sizable portion of the project concentrates on digital policies. Plans to encourage electric mobility, sustainable urban mobility, the creation of green spaces and parks, extensive tree planting in open spaces, the provision of electricity to ships berthed in Cypriot ports, the utilization of renewable energy sources, and the construction of energy-efficient buildings are a few of the proposed actions.

The mayor emphasized that the main objective of these measures is to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the energy footprint. He stressed how important each of these initiatives are in the direction of reaching climate neutrality.

The mayor of Aradippou, Evangelos Evangelides, reiterated this view by emphasizing their dedication to working with the state and promoting a green transition while providing assistance to the people in this challenging undertaking.

Andreas Papacharalambous, Mayor of Strovolos, emphasized that the twin challenges of green transition and digital transformation are the defining tasks that lie ahead in the years to come.

These municipalities' dedication to addressing climate change is quite impressive. They are not only defining their own future as they work toward their ambitious goal of becoming climate neutral by 2030; they are also serving as an example for all communities. Cyprus is demonstrating that when municipalities join together for a greener world, the possibilities are unlimited.
