The University of Cyprus has been acknowledged as the only institution from Cyprus to be listed in the popular Shanghai Ranking, which ranks institutions globally between 701 and 800, for an eighth year in a row. And among Greek-speaking universities, the university is ranked third.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities, sometimes referred to as the Shanghai Ranking, has been acknowledging the best universities in the world since 2003, according to a news statement released by the university. This classification has become known as the most trustworthy and pioneering model in university rankings due to its transparent methodology and reliance on objective third-party data.

The 2024 edition of the ARWU assessed over 2,500 institutions, with only the top 1,000 making it to the final list. The ranking system, developed by Shanghai Jiaotong University, evaluates universities based on six key indicators:

  • The number of alumni and faculty who have won Nobel Prizes or Fields Medals
  • The number of researchers recognized as Highly Cited Researchers by Clarivate
  • The volume of research articles published in leading scientific journals
  • The number of publications included in the Science Citation Index and the Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index
  • The overall performance of the institution relative to its size
