Frenaros is a large, entirely Greek village located in the Famagusta district, about 10 kilometers south of the city of Famagusta. A small part of the northern part of the village falls within the territory of the British base of Dekelia. The main drives of the village's population growth, were its close proximity to Famagusta, its very good road connection, and its successful agricultural holdings. At the moment there are 3,450 residents in Frenaros (World Population Review).
The village existed during the Middle Ages. It is marked as Frinaria on old maps. One theory claims that the Franciscan Latin monks known as the Fréres Mineures, who are said to have owned a monastery in the area, is where the village’s name comes from.
Frenaros was formerly an agricultural village with a range of crops, but watermelon and potato farming held a strong position due to the good soils and availability of water. The Watermelon Festival, held in the village of Frenaros every July, offers visitors fresh watermelon and products made from it, including ice cream, beverages and desserts. Frenaros’ "Halloumi Cheese" is well-known and recognized for its yellowish color, rich buttery scent, and exquisite flavor, even though several other areas also produce the famous traditional Cypriot cheese.
The village's population is primarily Cypriot, but it is also becoming more English. Everyone gets along well and it is a nice and friendly place to reside. There are several bars and eateries, which are great gathering spots.
