Larnaca is one of the oldest cities in Cyprus, built on the southeast coast of the island. The city is the successor of ancient Kitia, one of the most important kingdoms of ancient Cyprus, birthplace, among others, of the ancient philosopher Zenon. The name of Larnaca is associated with the death and burial of Saint Lazarus in the area. More specifically, it comes from the word "larnaca" which in ancient times meant "stone sarcophagus". In the area of ancient Kiti, many sarcophagi were found, among them two sarcophagi in the sanctuary of the church of Agios Lazarus, which is believed to be his burial place. So, from this large number of “larnaca” in the area, the city was renamed from Kitio to Larnaca. It is worth noting that during the Middle Ages, Larnaca was called "Alykes", due to the existence of its Salt Lake. During the period of Turkish rule (1570-1878), as it was an important port, Larnaca was known as "Skala" because the ships made a ladder (station) there.
