Tsiknopempti brings streets to life with food and music

Tsiknopempti, also known as Smokey Thursday, marks the joyful opening of Carnival season in Cyprus. Rooted in ancient traditions linked to celebrations of food, wine and community, the day signals the final feast before the fasting period of Lent begins. Its name comes from the irresistible aroma of grilled meat (“tsikna”) and the day it is celebrated, Thursday. Across the island, homes, streets and neighbourhoods fill with smoke, laughter and music as people gather to eat, celebrate and welcome Carnival.

Preparations begin early in the morning, with grills fired up outside houses, shops, schools and workplaces. Although it’s officially a working day, work often takes a back seat to the festivities. Traditional grills, known as foukou, are loaded with souvla, souvlaki, sausages and halloumi, filling towns and villages with the unmistakable scent of barbecued food. Wherever you walk, you’re likely to be invited to join a table, grab a bite and enjoy the moment.

As the day goes on, celebrations grow bigger and livelier. In Limassol, the heart of the festivities beats strongest, with street parties, music, dancing and serenade singers adding a nostalgic, romantic touch. Carnival celebrations continue for days, peaking with colourful parades, costumes and confetti that bring people of all ages together. Tsiknopempti is a reminder to pause, celebrate life and enjoy good food, good company and carefree moments—because during Carnival, joy comes first.
