Paphos introduces daily patrols to protect its coastline

Paphos Municipality is introducing a new organised programme to help prevent, detect and respond quickly to pollution at sea, strengthening efforts to protect the area’s beaches and marine environment. The four-month programme will provide daily monitoring along the coastal front of Paphos and Yeroskipou, with patrols operating seven days a week in both morning and afternoon shifts.

Specialised crews will use properly equipped vessels to monitor areas around swimming zones as well as the open sea, looking out for oil spills, solid waste, debris, sewage and other pollutants. If pollution is detected, the teams will be able to respond immediately with containment and clean-up equipment, while incidents will be recorded and monitored in coordination with the relevant authorities.

The €50,000 programme is funded by the Cyprus Ports Authority and the Paphos and Yeroskipou municipalities. The initiative aims to improve the cleanliness and environmental quality of the coastline, reduce response times when incidents occur and provide greater protection for the beaches and marine ecosystem enjoyed by residents and visitors throughout the year.
