Cyprus strengthens efforts to upgrade electricity system
Cyprus is stepping up efforts to upgrade its electricity system in response to rising demand, especially during the summer months. Electricity use has increased by 11% this year compared to last, with peak hours between 6pm and 9pm seeing the highest consumption. The government is focusing on practical projects to ensure a stable supply, keep costs under control, and improve overall energy security.
Key initiatives include infrastructure upgrades, work on the Vasilikos terminal and FSRU Prometheus, and the upcoming launch of a competitive electricity market in October 2025, which is expected to boost renewable energy use and lower costs. Plans are also in motion for a nationwide electricity storage system by mid-2026, alongside improvements to existing plants and support for hybrid solar and small-scale systems.
To address current pressures on the grid, some areas experienced controlled power cuts of up to 30 minutes in the evenings. The government is also supporting energy independence for households and small businesses, while promoting electricity interconnections with neighbouring countries to strengthen the island’s energy resilience.
