Cyprus launches new system to tackle cigarette butt pollution

Cyprus is taking a major step toward reducing pollution caused by cigarette butts and tobacco filters with the launch of the country’s first organised nationwide system for their collection and management. The initiative aims to tackle one of the most common forms of litter found on streets, beaches and public spaces, helping create a cleaner and healthier environment.

Cigarette butts are among the most widespread and harmful types of waste, often discarded carelessly and left to accumulate in urban areas and coastal environments. Their filters contain plastic materials that break down very slowly, contributing to long-term environmental pollution. The new system introduces a more organised approach focused on responsible disposal, collection and improved waste management practices.

The initiative also aims to encourage greater public awareness and more responsible habits among smokers through information campaigns and new infrastructure in public areas. Future plans include the installation of dedicated disposal points and educational actions designed to reduce littering and improve environmental responsibility. By changing how cigarette waste is managed, the programme hopes to significantly reduce pollution and improve the cleanliness of public spaces across the island.
