A 31-kilometer drive away from Nicosia city, at the base of Machairas, is the village of Lythrodontas, which is a part of the Nicosia district. The village currently has 2,736 residents (World Population Review). The settlement was established during the Byzantine era, but people used to live here since ancient times, according to archeological artifacts from the Hellenistic era.

It is reported in a document that the village got its name from the first settler, who was known as "Erythrodontas". In a variant of this story, Erythrodon—who through time took the name Lythrodon—is mentioned as a significant local landowner. As a result, he gave the place its name.
