The village of Liopetri has existed under the same name since medieval times and is referred to as "Ligopetri" on old maps. It is one of the so-called Kokkinohoria, and the village is situated in the Free district of Famagusta. Its delicious pomegranates and figs are among the best-known products the village produces.
The village of Liopetri is recognized for its exceptional setting, which has gained a lot of fame across all of Cyprus. It is now a memorial to the fallen of the National Liberation War, 1955-1959. Each year on August 15 the community honors the church of Panagia Eleousa with a customary feast. This church is one of the most exquisitely designed churches of the island, with its pointed roof and single-aisled basilica with a dome. It is said to date from the 16th century.
