Dekeleia belongs to the district of Larnaca and is located approximately 19 kilometers northeast of Larnaca, 62 kilometers southeast of Nicosia and 85 kilometers northeast of Limassol. The area is well-known for the British military base there, one of the two bases that exist in Cyprus, and is located between Larnaca and occupied Famagusta, as well as the route leading to Ayia Napa and its beautiful beaches. Since the area was not incorporated into the then-newly created Cypriot state in 1960, it has essentially remained British territory.
The military law is upheld by the Cyprus Joint Police Unit, and at the same time Dekeleia has its own legal system and police force. British people living in Dekeleia are eligible to vote in UK elections, in accordance with a unique system that applies to British individuals who live abroad. In the area co-live British and Cypriot citizens who together own land in Dekeleia, while also the British Ministry of Defense owns the remaining land. Besides the Cypriots and British citizens, around 3,000 British military administrative officials with their families, work and live in Dekeleia. There are two radio stations that broadcast throughout Cyprus and a television station whose signal only covers the Dekeleia bases. Dekeleia borders the UN-controlled ceasefire zone, as well as Turkish-held areas to the north.
Many British people choose Dekeleia to reside, because the system of the British bases is similar to UK’s, making them feel at home. At the same time, they have sunshine all year round and beautiful beaches where they can enjoy the island life that Cyprus provides.
In the residential area the real estate market includes luxury villas and houses, but also apartments. Dekeleia is an excellent area with high indicators of growth. Check out 12 houses to rent in Dekeleia.
