Pyla is a village located in the district of Larnaca. Pyla is encircled by the Larnaca Gulf, by the villages of Pergamos, Troulloi and Oroklini, and by the British Base at Dekelia. The name Pyla has a Greek origin, and according to one interpretation, it derives from the Greek word "gate" because, in ancient times, the settlement served as the only gateway to the Mesaoria plain. The village has currently 1,434 residents (World Population Review).
Pyla is one of four settlements that are located inside the "green line" or buffer zone, also known as the demilitarized zone separating the occupied and free areas controlled by the United Nations. The village's archeological sites include the well-known "Tomb of Pyla."
