A measure put forward by the Ministry of Education was approved by the Cyprus House of Representatives, which sets forth strict rules for the opening and functioning of international university branches in Cyprus.

The recently enacted law ensures that international university branches will function in the same manner as local universities. This framework has particular requirements meant to uphold high standards and increase the competitiveness of the higher education market in Cyprus.

The decision received approval by the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Youth, which noted that it gives foreign universities from third-countries and EU member states a clear legal framework for establishing a presence in Cyprus.

The government's overall plan to increase the standard of higher education in the Republic is in line with this legal development. It is also a component of the country's strategic goal to improve its educational system and establish Cyprus as a center for high intellectual achievement.

Ioannis Papameletiou, the Greek ambassador, was present at the plenary session where the law was approved. Notably, the National Technical University of Athens (also called Metsovian Polytechnic) and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens have previously indicated interest in opening branches in Cyprus.

It is anticipated that this action will strengthen Cyprus' standing as a location for foreign higher education, encouraging collaboration and increasing student opportunities.
