Struggle for survival in Larnaca's shopping scene
Due to store closures and relocations, local retailers are banding together to try to revitalize Larnaca's shopping district.
The shopping area in Larnaca is struggling, many stores are shutting or relocating to Metropolis Mall, making Ermou Street appearing extremely empty. To try and improve things, however, a few store owners have teamed up with Larnaca 2030, the organization aiming to make the city the Cultural European Capital. An exciting competition to create the best Christmas window display is how they're starting things off. In addition to recognition, the winning stores receive further marketing from Larnaca 2030 and the Shopkeepers Association.
The head of the Larnaca Shopping Centre, Dimitris Demetriou, reports that foot traffic to the stores is around the same as it was a year ago, which is somewhat encouraging. The problematic issue is that, although restaurants are booming, conventional shops are struggling.
The Shopkeepers' Association is collaborating with Larnaca 2030 to increase foot traffic and revitalize the area. Large-scale initiatives like repairing Alkis and Acropolis squares and renovating the entire shopping center are scheduled for 2024, so there is some optimism. The concern is that certain shops could be closed by the time everything is completed in 2026.
They are aware that it won't be simple, according to Demetriou. Both the rent and the two-year construction project are excessive. He is optimistic that they will keep to the timeline and are ensuring that customers can still access the stores throughout the renovation.
As a result, Larnaca's shopping scene is now going through some difficulties. However, with cooperation, entertaining competitions, and future changes, they hope to improve the situation.
